Historic preservation students from the Early College Program visited Massie Heritage Center to observe the restoration work and techniques with the Project Contractor, Mr. Omar El-Khalidi of Sterling builders and Restoration. Massie Heritage Center, Savannah’s first public school, was built in 1856, and throughout its history has served as a Union Hospital during the Civil War occupation of Savannah, as Freedmen’s School during Reconstruction, and continued to educate many Savannahians until its close as a regular public school in 1974. Recognizing the value of history education, the local school system still maintains Massie as a museum for history and architecture and serves as a field trip site for local and area students, as well as general visitors and groups.
The Historic Preservation Program for high school provides a foundation in the essential skills used in historic preservation and building restoration. Internships on local restoration sites allow students to apply their classroom learning under the supervision of professional preservationists. |
