Savannah's City Plan

Mrs. Adler shows Dr. Reps the city plan modelMassie Heritage Center currently has three permanent exhibits-a fourth is being planned. Savannah's City Plan details the unique environment in which Savannah was created. Savannah's Historic Landmark District is a 2.2 square mile area. It is the old city of Savannah as it developed according to James Edward Oglethope's plan from 1733 to 1856 when all of the publicly owned land was used up. The model in the center of this exhibit is situated in the same direction as the Historic District. The city grew on a 40-foot bluff overlooking the Savannah River. It is 18 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and it is a major port on the southeastern seaboards. Savannah's city plan is an 18th century plan that dates back to ancient Greece and then Rome. In this exhibit are examples of plans that may have influenced Oglethorpe's plan. Visit Massie to explore this teaching installation.
